The Samudra Cottage, a model rural homestead situated on the grounds of the Taj Samudra in the heart of Colombo, served as a working agricultural and educational research facility and as an authentic rural venue for special urban functions hosted by Cultural Survival. Created in 1989, it served as inspiration for related projects island-wide for six years until 1995.
During the December 1991 SAARC Summit Conference, Cultural Survival's Samudra Cottage facility served as a living exhibit of indigenous lifestyles by the Ministry of Environment for visiting heads of State from the SAARC region.
